Jodhpur: A special court on Wednesday granted life imprisonment to Asaram after the death sentence of Asaram Bapu. As a rape victim, a juvenile studying in her ashram,(controversial) with a judge, “In my humble opinion, Asaram has not broken the faith of the complainant, but also the image of saints among the common people spoiled.”

The 16-year-old girl said in her complaint that Asaram had called her in her ashram near Jodhpur near Jodhpur and raped her on August 15, 2013.

The police charge sheet against Asaram and four others was filed on November 6, 2013 under various sections of Poxo (Protection of Sexual Offenses for Sexual Offenses) Act, Juvenile Justice Act and Indian Penal Code.

On Wednesday, Special Judge Madhusudan Sharma issued a 453-page verdict in Jodhpur Central Jail where 77-year-old Asaram was arrested. Asaram Bapu(controversial) arrested in Indore and was brought to Jodhpur on September 1, 2013.

Apart from Asaram, two other accused – Shilpi, Chindwara (MP), Asaram’s Gurukul’s hostel boardroom, in which the survivor and his brother had studied and Sharad Gurukul’s manager was also convicted by the court and sentenced to 20 years in jail.

However, the court declared two others innocent – Shiva, Ashram employee, and Prakash, Asaram’s cooking. Judge Sharma remarked that Asaram is considered to be a saint and not only the millions of followers of the country, but also around 400 ashrams in foreign(controversial) countries.

He added that the father of the rape was a disciple of Asaram and contributed to the construction of his ashram at Shahnanpur in Uttar Pradesh. His devotion to Asaram was such that his son and daughter were admitted to Chhindwara Gurukul for study.
